CUELLAR APOLOGISES
Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar has apologised for his part in letting the team down in the defeat against Arsenal during the weekend.
The former Rangers defender also said that he expects his form to improve from the next few matches.
Cuellar was responsible for Aston Villa conceding the third goal against Arsenal during the weekend. Villa lost the match heavily 3-0, which has brought them back into the relegation mix after a few weeks of apparent safety. The performance of Cuellar has drew intense criticism amongst the Villa supporters, who are extremely displeased with the current manager Alex McLeish.
Cuellar has been extremely good for Aston Villa in the last few matches. He has been responsible for Villa conceding just one goal in the last three matches. His return to the central defence position has been one of the reasons for the upturn in the fortunes for the Midlands club.
However, the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal coupled with a number of results going against their way has now meant that they are back in the relegation mix. Cuellar said that the team lost against Arsenal not because of the lack of quality, but because of the two expensive mistakes they committed at the back.
“We were very disappointed. Everyone is gutted. We made two very expensive mistakes at the back and conceded two goals and that killed the game. I think we are all sorry about the result, especially for the fans who came to the game. It was very frustrating for the whole team and for the defenders in particular. If you look at the first two goals they were both individual mistakes,” said Cuellar after the match.
Aston Villa will be facing the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool in the next five matches.
DELPH BACKS VILLA TO BOUNCE BACK
Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph has said that the club needs to bounce back against Swansea after the defeat against Tottenham.
After the appointment of new manager Alex McLeish, Aston Villa were expected to be in a transitional period this season. It has exactly been the same and it was none more so better demonstrated than by the defeat at the hands of Tottenham. However, Fabian Delph has said that the match against Swansea provides Aston Villa with a great opportunity to returning to winning ways.
"The dressing room is hurting. We all have fire in our stomachs and we're determined to bounce back. It was very disappointing for us. There's no-one more frustrated and disappointed than the boys. But the key now is a need to focus on the next game and look to move on," he said.
Fabian Delph said that he was extremely sorry for the away supporters who had travelled long distances to the white Hart Lane to see their team. He also said that losing to Tottenham was necessarily not a bad thing given the way the London club have been playing this season.
Initially, Tottenham were expected to challenge for the Champions League position only, but now they are in a position capable of even challenging for the Premier League title. Hence, losing to a team with the title in their sights does not seem to be a great loss for Fabian Delph, who believes that Aston Villa can rectify the mistakes in the Swansea match. Aston Villa will be making the trip to Swansea on Sunday, but they need to be aware of the fact that Swansea have had an excellent home record this season. It has been one of the main reasons for their lofty positions in the table.
